Traditional Mac OS, before NeXTSTEP integration, actually used carriage return alone. Older software, and perhaps some current Mac software, will actually taste for that.
To my knowledge I have not produced any files with anything other than LF for many years, perhaps decades. When I edit a file with vi and send it to the printer with lp it works. Possibly driver handshakes or doing something there.
