Strange shift across my life in attitudes towards peer review, which once upon a time was spoken of as synonymous with truth, & now is commonly criticized for its many faults. Alas, it was a bad solution to a very real problem: that due to increasing specialization, editors of journals couldn't understand every paper submitted. So editors showed papers to contributors, who could understand them, & assess whether they were legitimate or not. Axing peer review would be great but we'd need a larger reform of the way knowledge is passed around among scholars, either altering the journal system or replacing it entirely.
