Thank you for that link. Interesting article. I’m actually quite familiar with all of those issues, but haven’t found them to be as painted. That is a theoretical possibility rather than common or inevitable.

I will say that it can be a bit of work to stay compliant with modern protocols if you’re managing several mail servers. But I think the author is being a little disingenuous. I don’t believe he’s never had spam run through his stuff. A block doesn’t only come from email. A hacked website or other compromised/misbehaving services from a IP can impact in the same way. Yeah, keep your tools clean. He also gloss over some stuff that makes me think he was late implementing some practices. I think he isn’t as pure as he states.

Also, some of what he said doesn’t apply to the big players. It’s more likely another privately hosted email service, like a small business with an understaffed IT department. They are the idiots who permanently block large ranges of IPs. Fast and easy. Not smart. This is a small problem, not a big one.

I do agree, email servers aren’t for the lax. But if you want independence, this is the way.
