While it's trying to play cute with old detective story tricks, it is definitely still relying, almost absurdly so at times to the point of rending it threadbare, on the trope that the mastermind and the detective are in a symbiotic relationship. Sure most of these people could walk if they simply did not talk to Columbo but it feels a little like saying a Bond mastermind could simply shoot Bond. Certain tropes must be followed even if the reasons for them initially have been lost in the annals of pre-episodic writing.
