Most of us don't need more powerful computers. We'd be better off with cheaper, more efficient, more reliable computers. But the software industry is structured around increasing the demands placed on consumer hardware. Eventually, we have to upgrade in order to continue performing the same tasks that previous hardware cycles handled with ease.
