The government organizations lied in the congress more than one time about they don’t do the surveillance on the level that Snowden revealed. This is a crime by itself. And I think it’s just too much power to have if you’re not being honest about it in front of another government organization that supposed to be the check and balance. And you have that level of surveillance and you still can have a scandal like Epstein which involves people from the highest levels of organizations and even after it come out nobody is judged. And keep in mind Epstein stuff was almost like a well known secret before it completely blown open. So I think it is healthy to have some skepticism about all the good intentions this government bodies have. Snowden himself explained if they were honest to congress as they were supposed to be he probably wouldn’t have did what he did.
And in defense of Snowden due to the Espionage Act he needed to flee because the court doesn’t work like a normal crime. In the normal court system the motive and circumstances also effects the punishment. For example if you killed a person who entered your house is not the same killing a person randomly on street or killing a person after carefully planning for months. In this three cases even if you killed someone it doesn’t end up the same in terms of punishment. But the violation of Espionage Act doesn’t look if it is actual public benefit or it was the right thing to do it just look at if the crime happened or not. So in Snowden’s case it doesn’t make sense for him to go to court or something because he never said I didn’t do it. So it’s certain that he will be punished for that.
To be honest I think he is a hero like in a way saying “No” to the ring of power. This kind of unchecked power in the hands of government (and please keep in mind they lied to the people about it which is a huge red flag) is just corruptive. On top of that there is no agent that I’m aware of that gets harmed because of this (but not %100 sure of course).
So yeah I think he is hero. It’s funny for me to says he is a criminal. “George Washington” was a criminal in the eyes of the governing body. So it doesn’t mean much for me.
