Griffith (nprofile…drjd) there's several kinds of hive mind. Instead of normal population you get drones, which are like slaves but don't care at all about happiness. Instead there's a "deviancy" that you need to keep down by basically employing police drones. Amenities and housing are harder to get. You don't need to make generators because you get a special solar panel starbase building that gives energy income. And instead of being able to enslave enemy pops, you can only take them as livestock and they each make some food.

This hive mind was a "progenitor hive". You take massive combat penalties and need to have special "offspring" ships in your fleets and it makes fleet management much more difficult. In exchange you can make one of your offspring a vassal and break off a sector as an independent nation, which is something normal hives can't do. This hive integrated cybernetics in endgame and was able to assimilate other races like the borg.

Previously I played a very different hive which was a fungal hive that coexisted with a tree of life they have to plant on every world for a huge food cost but it gives bonus housing and pop growth. Their fleets were much easier to maintain but not being able to break off a vassal was a significant handicap. This hive chose a genetic manipulation endgame and genetically engineered its captured enemies with traits that made them more efficient food sources like "delicious" and "docile".

Both hives were very different from the psionic dragon people I played before who had a teeny tiny number of pops but massive production output. But they also had elections and lots of stuff I didn't have to deal with this time.
