Security? Mastodon probably has a lot more eyes looking at it than Pleroma.
Performance? I believe you've said yourself that for larger instances, Mastodon scales better than Pleroma does. It's just that Mastodon is written in Ruby on Rails and performs poorly for smaller instances.
