Trying out a new skin for MastodonSo the Mangane front-end for #Mastodon (and #Pleroma and #Akkoma ) is a little too buggy. There are times when it suddenly consumes all the memory on my computer and my browser freezes for a few minutes before crashing. (I am using LibreWolf).

So far Phanpy has been one of the nicest alternatives to the default Mastodon experience that I have tried. It is pretty minimal, but still looks quite pretty. My only problem with it is that it doesn’t seem to correctly format rich-text posts (Markdown, HTML).

That’s the beauty of #ActivityPub is that you can not only switch instances, but you can switch client software as well. You can view ActivityPub-based apps like Mastodon on your smartphone, or in your web browser, or you can download a native app, and each would use different software to do it, but you still login to your usual server with your usual password and see your own posts and connect to your same friends no matter what device you are using to connect. Even better: you can have multiple apps running in your browser. These alternative clients serves as a kind of “skin” or a “theme” to your ActivityPub-based app. If you don’t like how Mastodon looks on Mastodon, try logging into your Mastodon server with Phanpy or Enaphore.
