Exactly. A guy i know at my local bar had/has a HUGE alcohol/coke problem. endless cycle off up->down->up->down with it. Hes been coke free for several weeks I heard, so he essentially broke that cycle and has been getting his life back together. But he came in the other day for his usual beer+shot. He may have been more alive and mentally present than I’d ever seen him, but I can already sense he‘ll fall back into it. I hope to be wrong though.

Two other guys at this bar have sworn off alcohol and spent roughly two weeks ordering sodas/water/etc. But they both eventually caved and ordered “just one beer”. Hard to watch but that’s how it happens.
