Every version of Android I've ever used has utterly awful auto-dim UX.
Some very basic stuff they can't get right:
Do not trust ambient light sample when waking from incoming call or alarm event. You're probably in a pocket or purse and user will not be able to read screen. Replace immediately with any brighter sample.
Do not lower brightness concurrent with user interaction.
Allow user to set a minimum brightness. Hardware minimum is completely inaccessible with some visual impairments.
