I finally got my vehicle rolling again after some creative fixing... đ
I cut the hard line to the clutch slave cylinder, which allowed me to pull the master cylinder out to get the line apart. I discovered that the unit had been previously replaced and whomever did the previous replacement had thought it was a good idea to bend one of the ends of the clip that holds the line in place. That's why I struggled so much to get the clip out. I had to file the end off, then use a punch to push it through the old master cylinder.
I cleaned up the ends of the line, and then used a coupling (the brass bit in the pics) to tie the line back together. Since I will not too eventually be replacing the rest of the system, I just used a compression fitting, especially since this system is fairly low pressure. I'd never use one on a brake line outside of am extreme emergency.
Bleeding the air out of the system was... Intersting. Honda usually does a good job with most things, but in the case of the Element, the point where I cut the line is the high point of the system, and that makes it much more difficult to get the air out. But, I got it with some fiddling and now the clutch feels better than new! (The original master cylinder had a stupid diaphragm to "soften" engagement, and it just make the clutch inconsistent and mushy. I hate them and this was an opportunity to install a unit without one and I'm very glad I did.)
