I ended up using Duplicator to clone the website entirely. I don't have the time to recreate everything manually, nor the technical skill to just migrate the bits and pieces of the database that are needed. I trust some sweeper plugin to get rid of orphaned entries.
It works perfectly now, Duplicator is the only working free backup plugin that I know of. The others trick you in their pro versions with max. 50mb upload archives etc...
