Bidirectional charging is the way to turn EVs from pure loads to handle on an already overloaded grid, to dynamic entities that can both absorb or push energy into the grid depending on the situation.

NEMA has now published the Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSP) Power Export Permitting Standard, which defines the protocols that can be used by both car manufacturers and grid operators to enable dynamic exchange of energy between each other.

This allows both vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-building (V2B) modes, so the car can be configured to push energy either back into the grid, or to power your own home.

Most of the EVs around, according to some recent statistics, run less than 20 km per day, even though they would be able to run 200-400 km between charges.

Such initiatives ensure that EVs don’t turn into huge power-hungry devices that passively suck up from the grid even when they don’t need to. They can also be configured to dynamically communicate with the grid so they can push or pull energy on the basis of the current demand, they can act as stabilizers for the grid without necessarily having to invest in buying big energy storage solutions, and they can also let EV owners save money on their energy bills.

The only downside is that the new standard is currently paywalled. These kind of initiatives should be done as much in the open as possible, and in such a way that entry barriers are low for any potential manufacturer.
