Lots of copies from people you knew (kind of an impressive network when you think about it), as well as industrious mail order type setups.
I think a lot of older home computers were only successful due to piracy to be honest. And it saddens me that to this day we know how to lower piracy, yet the opposite is constantly done:(
(Hint anti-piracy doesn’t work, but fair prices and fair access do.)
