I use them as inbox and outbox relays, that way I'm less likely to see notes from replyguy bots and other spam sources.
Running one guarantees that I'll be able to see all the posts from other users I am subscribed to, even if relays out of my control aren't accepting them for some reason, and everyone I subscribe to can use it for the same reason.
