Fundamentally, a lot of men in power do not trust anyone who doesn't have an encyclopedic knowledge of their own preferred sport, though often they'll accept deep knowledge in any "masculine" sport. They act like something is wrong with you if you don't have it - there's a barrier that can't be overcome.
(I get by on repeating my husband's knowledge. I don't care about sports now, after the Royals tried to hire a molester, and then acted like the fans were overreacting when we objected.)
