I'm starting to look at an extreme form of othering, explicitly calling people "NPCs" (non-player characters, as in D&D). It implies that those people aren't really people and may tie closely with finding entertainment in the death and suffering of people.
I'm still trying to come to terms with the admiration too many people have for gunning down a man in the street. If they think of Thompson as an NPC, that could be a big part of the explanation.
