Great Gray Owl (Strix nebulosa) perched in a snowy evergreen in Homer, Alaska. This is possibly the coolest bird I've ever gotten to photograph. I kept my distance to make sure to not interrupt its hunting. I was using a long telephoto lens, then cropped the photos for this illusion of being close. (More images on my website.) I could see that it successfully hunted a couple rodents, but it stayed on the ground in tall grass, so no photos of that.
