It just hides the instance from ur view and auto-rejects follow requests. Its a illusion of safety that can easily trick u into being too open and endangering urself much more

U can mute an instance by opening the settings -> Mutes and blocks -> Mutes -> Domains, searching the name of the instance and muting it
