My 10yo daughter last night told me shes not proud of her country... and i think i finally understand.
I see the country and the government as two different things. Im not really proud of my government, but i am proud of my people. The things we have endured, the things we create, and the spirit we carry. The flag isnt about the government, its about the people, its about the idea of what we could be, and its about what we have been. Its about the people who have laid down their lives in service to our country, to the principles for which it was founded.
We celebrate independence day not to be proud of our government, but proud of our people who stood up to tyranny, said enough is enough, and decided to go their own way, at great risk to themselves and their families. Would you stand up to a king? One backed by a powerful army?
