There’s this design myth that designers keep propagating over and over - that sharp contrast is bad in design (pure black on white) for example. They learned this once, memorized the terms (halation) but never once question their beliefs -well, the books say so!!!

If they took the time to investigate, they would learn that modern screens significantly reduce strain due to pixel density and adaptive brightness. Pure black is actually great in dark mode because it saves on battery by turning pixels off instead of trying to render them constantly. And the darker environment is usually much more forgiving in terms of contrast (especially due to adaptive brightness).

It takes 2-3 hours of continuous use to feel any discomfort on average assuming you have full screen brightness and perfectly lit environment, which almost no one does.

The only time you should really consider softer blacks is for massive walls of text. On social media apps this is less of a concern imo. News websites - yeah maybe consider softer blacks. But sadly, designers don’t think too much for themselves and end up regurgitating the same stupid thing they learned which was perhaps more true at one point but is much less so with advances in tech. It’s perfectly fine to use pure black in design, it’s not a mortal sin some people want you to think it is.
