I was chaperoning a mission trip when another parent was leading devotional. The topic for study was a Gandhi quote asserting that the biggest obstacle to Christianity is the bad behavior of Christians.
So she asked the kids what they thought and they start self flagellating about how Christians behave so badly.
I finally interjected. First, Gandhi was not a Christian and has no authority whatsoever to speak on our faith. More importantly, I said, we are all responsible for our faith or lack thereof, unbelievers included, and that in my experience the biggest obstacle to faith is pride.
Scripture tells us that unbelievers know the truth but suppress it in unrighteousness. This was true for me before I came to Christ. I was prideful and loved my sin and didn't want to submit to a higher authority.
I told the kids that they have an obligation to represent Christ in their behavior, but the world doesn't get to use them as an excuse for their unrepentant sin.
