This Verge piece is really great. Coming from media and seeing the slow, inexorable death of basically everything I loved, this piece covers some of the "why" (though maybe not enough) but goes into a lot of detail on the possible futures for the more flexible folk in the industry.

Real inflection point right now for the tech press, and media in general — and I am happy as hell to be witnessing the decline from the outside, not the inside.
