I think that it's just that Windows has always hidden the gubbins and the user sees the hardware as units of... hardware. There's my USB stick, hard drive, whatever.
I refurbished my sister's laptop with the current Mint and it asked her something about 'mounting' her external USB drive. She rang me as she didn't know whether to say yes or no... she loves Mint though (as do I, very user friendly).
