I'm not sure how people well past their teens find the courage to learn to operate a vehicle and take it on public roads.

Dad taught me how to ride a bicycle when I was in 1st grade (~5 yrs old). Next year I started taking the cycle to school 4km away, accompanied by two older friends who rode on either side to keep me safe. Have been on two wheels in some form ever since.

If I were to consider the risks of riding on public roads today while starting from scratch, I'd probably give it a pass.
