Oh, the horror: lots and lots of scale insects on my Japanese cherry tree. 🙀
Is there anything I can do, other than surrender? Insecticides are out of question.
I believe the species is Pulvinaria hydrangeae, as I have a big Hortensia which was heavily infested 5 years ago. I thought I got rid of the scale insects but cutting back the Hortensia to its roots, but I guess I was being very naïve… 😒
Usually I don't see any birds in my small gardeb because all the neighbours have a cat or two, but recently sparrows have taken an interest in the cherry tree. The other day I noticed some “honey dew” on some plants growing underneath the cherry tree, but I couldn't see any aphids. Must have been the scale insects.
This sucks.
