yeah you would just go in, ask for an application, fill it out then if the owner or whoever was there they might look at it and if they liked it they would interview you, otherwise you'd just wait for a phone call. for most entry-level stuff you'd either be offered a job on the spot if you could carry a conversation and not come off as dumb or weird.

I even did this a few years ago, there was a company in my industry near my house and I just stopped in and dropped off a resume on my way home one day. I think a week or two later they called me asking if I was interested in an interview, did the interview and got offered a job that afternoon. I didn't even know if they were hiring for engineers, I just figured it was worth the 2 minutes to stop by and drop off a resume.
