There is DEFINITELY a money component to playing DnD. The player's handbook details their suggested conversion rates between gold, silver, copper, electrum, and platinum pieces. It also has suggested pricing for most common items and some magical items. However, there is no set cap on money supply or anything.

That said, the DM of a particular game has absolute authority to change anything he wants. He could use Bitcoin and cap the in-game amount for the campaign. He would need to decide how much each of the items in-game costs when purchasing from NPCs, perhaps with some room for negotiations, but the players could negotiate between each other when making trades with other players.

Would definitely be a fun experiment.
