It occurred to me today while asking someone a hypothetical to gauge their intelligence that the result depends on the whether the scenario is based around a natural desire or aversion (such as winning the lottery, or getting sick with cancer, etc) versus something that is abstract and divorced from basic wants and fears (such as waking up with four arms instead of two, finding out that gravity is a choice, etc). Most people, even the mentally challenged, will answer the first type of hypotheticals with ease because it's practically built into their day-to-day lives. But it's the second that throws others for a loop because, for once, they have to use their imagination...which they rarely use at all.

And sadly, a lot of people simply lack that special something to do just that.
