Swinney refutes ASN claims
The First Minister has refuted the claim that the government has failed Additional Support Needs (ASN) students and their families, despite the number of ASN teachers falling by 598. Funding for each ASN child was £3,764 in 2022-23, down from £5,698 in 2012-13. Pressure group ASN Reform Scotland’s survey of its members found only one of 199 parents thought their child was getting a quality education, with 97% saying their child did not, and only 2.5% of respondents said things were improving but left a long way to go.
The Scottish Children’s Services Coalition says there has been a sharp decline in the number of legally-binding education support plans for complex needs children, with a 61% fall in the numbers with a Co-ordinated Support Plan (CSP) in the decade 2014-2024.

Under the guise of introducing a ‘feminist’ town planning, Edinburgh is to have a makeover designed to improve safety for people of ‘marginalised genders’. In the midst of worries over the cost of living and straitened council budgets, they will find money to erect statues of ‘named women of colour, queer women and ordinary women ‘who aren’t the ruling classes’.
Taking their lead from Vienna and Barcelona, which have published manuals entitled ‘Gender mainstreaming made easy’, they will usher in wider pavements, more public benches, better lighting, ramps for wheelchairs and buggies and commemorations of women and the queer community. Edinburgh has already enshrined ‘gender budgeting’ in its financing, according to Scottish Green councillor Alys Mumford, prioritising gritting pavements in winter over gritting roads.
Women’s campaigning group Murray Blackburn Mackenzie suggests it would be better to cease licensing sexual entertainment venues in the city, saying ‘state-sanctioned objectification of women isn’t feminist’. But the council’s true agenda is not to help women, but other marginalised groups.
