In 1991, the publicly-owned InterCity bus network in Aotearoa was sold to a consortium of investor-owned coach companies. The rationale was that along with "deregulation" - reforms that and long distance coach regulations more favourable to investor-owned operations - this would help to create a thriving competitive market for long distance coach services. Prices would go down, service quality would go up, queue the ticker tape parade.
