There is that thing going around on fedi, saying that if someone "powerful" says that you hurt somebody, then it is game over for you.
Because if you aggressively deny that you did anything bad, that you hurt anybody, your aggressive denial will be used against you, as yet another piece of evidence that you're bad and should be exiled.
And if you admit that you hurt somebody and apologize, your admission will be used against you as an evidence that you yourself agree that you're bad, and therefore you should be exiled.
(It is interesting how the proponents of this theory seem to believe that there are no other options beyond "_aggressively_ denying wrongdoing" and "admitting wrongdoing".)
So there is no way for you to avoid getting exiled. There is nothing you can do to avoid that, so the only right thing to do is apparently to aggressively deny, because at least this way you will not tarnish your image in the eyes of people who sided with you.
And... what the fuck is that? Isn't the most reasonable thing to do, when you understand that you fucked up and unintentionally hurt somebody, to apologize and to make amends? Not because of how it will make look you in the eyes of others, but because you hurt somebody, and making amends would be the right thing to do? How does it even matter how will unaffected onlookers interpret that, if you're such an "independent thinker"?
Maybe this is some sort of neurotypical shit, where you're more concerned about appearances than about not hurting people.
Maybe this is why I'm getting into trouble on here so often, for doing what I think is the right thing to do, instead of doing what will make my public image better.
