I'm extremely noob in music theory, but perhaps circle of fifths can give you a good start:

Also when you are using a scale, and selecting randomly, make sure the notes that are adjacent are one full note apart. For example in C major, {C, E, G}. I don't remember who said this, but the idea was to have an easy start for coming up with solo riffs.
