Email is generally unencrypted text that sits in a folder/directory/database using the same, and any sysadmin or operator can read it. It's as secure as anything with zero security.
A disgruntled employee sabotaged keyboards at a major company I worked for. All of them. All hands on deck disaster. The whole line stopped. Imagine if that person was a sysadmin handling your email.
Even that doesn't faze people. "Just email the password."
