In my experience, the person goes into a short cycle of turmoil, but then pops out of their den back at their starting position. Some of that is driven by the fact that the conspiracy theories were protecting them from having to face the far more brutal reality that they don't want to face.
They hold these cockamamie beliefs as an ego defense precisely BECAUSE the reality is too scary and too hard, while the beliefs are simpler, and they control the narrative.
