We had a waiver for them but that was during Covid and because we were using it for education purposes. We use Google Chat at work. I don't know if that's free for non-business people though.
The chat feature also lets you create spaces for specific purposes (we do it all the time for programmes we're working on together), so it could be quite useful for this sort of thing, plus you can curate members so it's more private.
