Why did John Carter bomb? I call it memetic attrition. Over time the world where a work was created fades away. This used to take thousands of years because while kings and emperors might die the culture remained almost the same. Soldiers carried swords. A walled city was a viable defensive technology. Most people grew crops or raised livestock. Then around 1750 or so the pace picked up and the world 100 years later had been transformed by railroads, the telegraph and photography. In the next fifty years it would be utterly transformed again by electricity, audio recording and telephony. Then came the automobile and cinema, and nothing has ever been the same.
