Why is your MC the way they are?
Kessy was born in a loving family, but has lost her Mother due to an laboratory accident at the age of 8. Thus, she lives in a constant state of fear that she may lose her Dad also, and this leads to her crying a lot for no obvious reason. But as her relationship to Darlene grows, and she becomes aware of inevitability of death, and she becomes stronger.
Until she's the one who has to pull the trigger, so to speak.
