That's a good point, npub1ary93kr00e2m3zwpf4c5mgyctsr0sr80p07aw6xgcc4pw2v2md8qe5md4c (npub1ary…md4c)! We need to continuously ask ourselves: where have we been and where are we headed and are we stuck?
I think the important route out of the local minimum is indeed pluralism (as many have said). Our colleagues might pursue the same questions as us but via very different approaches and when it comes to "who knows?", we need to respect the importance of that happening.
For instance, several have argued that the intensive focus on amyloid in Alzheimer's at the cost of other possible causes may have been a mistake (that's still TBD).
If we can maintain pluralism, it minimizes the chances of our getting stuck. So we shouldn't all jump on those bandwagons (and our funding agencies need to recognize the value of a distributed portfolio too).
