There’s a near sci-fi book called The Integral Trees where an exploration space crew leave their ship to explore a unique system where life can exist. They left an AI named Sharls Davis Kendy behind on the ship, and generations pass, and eventually he is forgotten about along with most space tech. He’s actually a human personality transferred into the ship to serve as its commander and as a representative of the State.
The author brilliantly describes how this AI has been patiently waiting for 500 years and ran out of memory space forcing him to erase old memories to make room for new ones, keeping only the conclusions without the proofs.
