Yes, it's a good subversive move to shake up the status quo. Their presence is more insidious and pervasive than just gatekeeping knowledge. Papers still need to get published, which unfortunately still means going through the academic journals for no good reason at all other than "it's just how things have been done" and that the journals themselves lobby so much to hold onto their monopoly. They have a stranglehold on "legitimizing" research and handing out "impact factors" to scientists that literally makes or breaks careers because funding agencies still lean heavily on those metrics.
