Our neighbor lady always took it upon herself to beautify the neighborhood, putting out plants everywhere and keeping the streets tidy. After she died late last year, I have been trying to fill her role at least in part. So when people see me picking up cigarette butts and other trash that accumulates on the streets, they sometimes say, "Just like Yasuda-san," which makes me feel I'm doing some good, even though I couldn't possibly duplicate all she did. Especially missed are the daily gatherings of people who stopped by to talk with her. Even dogs being walked by her house often stop, expecting her to be there to greet them, or perhaps to pay their respects. We were lucky to have had such a good neighbor.
