"Weird take
The Mona Lisa is a remarkable painting and it subtly reveals many things about Leonardo and the Arno River and the history of the time and place, beyond the image of the woman itself.
But there are many, many far more magnificent paintings."
I think the Mona Lisa is mainly famous for being famous, like Kim Kardashian. It's a great painting. But when you visit it in the Louvre, the striking thing is not the painting itself, but the enormous crowd of people attempting to view it, like religious pilgrims visiting a saint's tomb.
People seem to be projecting their search for perfect beauty, or a "masterpiece", on this painting. I don't hold this against the Mona Lisa.
