A common fallacy is that the Native American population was peaceful and pristine up until the Europeans showed up and destroyed their civilizations.
It is possible that sometimes this may have been a good thing.
The Aztecs before the Europeans, were sacrificing enough innocent people that they build monumental towers made from their skulls.
To those innocents, destined to be slaughtered, the Spanish would have been seen as rescuers.
