Moving to place that doesn't require a vehicle is possible. You have to want to live there.
The U.S. is pretty tough for easy access to transit - but can be done, IF your expectations are not the kind "that I would never use those"...

I've lived through all of those concepts. I like trains. Buses are OK. Taxi's (or equivalent) for the last mile... Bicycles if area is safe for them.
It really comes down to 'expectations' - and I don't mean "lowering them".
