It was certainly a big factor in the pre-Brexit propaganda, which was full of stories like “Polish immigrants eating swans”. Not sure about now, I’m not really following this type of media.

Russian anti-immigration narratives are stupid mostly because if they want to stop “replacement of ethnic Russian population by immigrants” the easiest way to do so is to stop getting ethnic Russians killed in thousands in the war 🤷 And usually it’s the same people who support the war, and at the same time anti-immigrant sentiments (classic example - Milchakov or “Topaz”), so this is just inconsistent.

But in EU and partly UK there’s a fundamental debate about the immigration controls. Some left-wing movements are pushing a narrative where essentially there should be no border controls at all because “no human is illegal”, “every human life is worth the same” etc. This was reflected in 2015 Merkel’s “invitation”, which now results in Germany returning illegal immigrants… to Poland, because they claim they arrived from there.

This is one of the main drivers today behind the populist parties like AfD in Germany and “Konfederacja” in Poland. And of course, majority of their arguments is a pure populism, like “Konfederacja” picking on Ukrainians (and Russians, Belarussians etc) who are employed at like 80%. But the core issue, an uncontrolled inflow of immigration into EU, remains largely valid.
