I've deployed systems that relied heavily on it (even systems that would remote-boot over https over the internet to grab a kernel and an initramfs).

But the pivot_root limitation made me move to dm-verity setups instead. This is still purely readonly, but I got the support for pivot_root back (this was not actually for containers, just workloads that relied on bubblewrap).
