I recently told my coworkers a story about how I was denied a US visa a decade ago. I was planning a business trip, and I had a thick folder of letters to present to the immigration officer, proving that I have a legitimate reason to travel.
"That won't do", he said, "You are young, pretty and unmarried, so I think you'll go to the US, marry on arrival and will stay in the US. We can't have that."
"Wow, so unfair, this is discrimination!", said coworkers.
And it sure is, and it sure is "legal". A stark reminder why people from the countries that have relative freedom of travel should value it more, even if they never ever travel.
As a bonus, I think it might be a fun exercise for US and EU citizens to download PDF forms for their countries' visitor visa applications, and consider whether those collect an adequate amount of details about the travellers.
