Okay, author of this study was heavily criticised of the methodology.
You can also look at his twitter to easily see he's not unbiased, but let's put that aside as you can always claim he's just telling the truth and the truth is not what pro-Ukrainian side watns.
Lots of mistakes of the study were pointed out in this article:
https://ukrainian-studies.ca/2014/12/01/taras-kuzio-study-ukrainian-nationalism-university-ottawa/
To summarise the most important critiques (that's not all):
- Exaggerating support for separatism: Katchanovski allegedly inflated support for separatism in the Donbas by combining respondents who supported full independence (31%) with those who preferred autonomy within a federal Ukraine (23%), thus misleadingly claiming a majority backed separatism.
- Lack of transparent research methodology: He does not lay out his research for external review, making it difficult to verify his claims.
- Ignoring key evidence: He omits reports from major human rights organizations (UN, OSCE, Amnesty International) that place the blame for war crimes primarily on Russia and separatists.
- Unproven sniper claims: He alleges that Euromaidan “shooters” were positioned in multiple buildings, including the Hotel Ukraina, but offers blurry photos and speculative arguments.
- Unrealistic scenarios: Critics argue it was impossible for Euromaidan to control an entire Soviet-era hotel during chaotic protests.
- Ignoring alternative hypotheses: He fails to consider other explanations, such as involvement of Russian operatives or rogue law enforcement.
- Lack of forensic expertise: He claims to determine bullet trajectories and shooter positions retroactively despite not being a forensic specialist.
To me, that's disqualifying his research, especially lack of forensic expertise, lack of transparent methodology and not addressing other reports on the matter
Another critique was published in a book by American historian specializing in Ukraine history, here's a full chapter:
